I see you standing
roots exposed

the earth gave way
beneath you
eroded over time
the water that sustains you
rose up
rushed by you

revealing more of what holds you
standing there
these hard winds
whip through your branches
you sway
and groan
yet keep standing

reaching
for sun and sky
from a depth of strength
I do not see
but know is There
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. Jeremiah 17:7-8
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fail; God will help her at break of day. Psalm 46:1-5
Inspired….by those who’ve courageously known and testified of His grace in hard and hidden places - I see you standing…by Joni’s Story…and by this week’s poetry challenge at high calling blogs

I liked this phrase…
“The water that sustains you
rose up”
Something about the irony of it.
So glad you participated! And touched that you offered it as part of what happened over at Ann’s. So unexpected, so marvelous.

water that sustains you
rose up
rushed by
I like those lines. Sometimes I expect God–or friends–to sustain me in a pampering kind of way. But no. Sometimes the sources that sustain us can only rush by.

Thanks for the comment, Marcus.
Yes, and sometimes God “rushes by” us with a greater purpose in mind – that He might reveal the roots in our lives for our sanctification and His glory. “…now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials…these have come so that your faith, which is worth more than gold, may be proved genuine…”
